Almost everyone who owns and/or runs a website has at some point or other heard about the importance of Search Engine Optimization (or SEO for short). Unfortunately, not everyone readily knows what SEO is, how it is properly done and it’s potential benefits. This post is the first in a series of articles designed to rectify that situation.

For now, we’ll start with the basics, with future posts becoming more and more sophisticated as your knowlwedge of SEO deepens. Toady we focus simply on What is SEO?

What is SEO?

  • SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization
  • Search Engine Optimziation means that one “optimizes” one’s website to rank well in the search engines for select terms and phrases
  • There are three (maybe four) major Search Engines (in order of importance): Google, Yahoo, Live.com (aka MSN) and (perhaps) Ask.com

How does one “do” SEO?

SEO experts use a variety of methods and techniques to help a site rank well in the search engines, such as:
  • Intelligently placing Keywords (relevant terms and phrases) on Web Pages
  • Linking your web pages to each other in the right way
  • Consistently adding high quality, new content to your website or blog
  • Attracting new inbound links to your site from other credible resources on the web
